Comic Story Lines vs Movie Storylines:  Which do you prefer?

 
We can all agree that Hollywood has put out some pretty amazing movies over the past few years as well as a few flops.

When they are writing these scripts, do you think it is important for them to follow the source material exactly or should the writers have some freedom to expand the universe and create something new for us?  How about the few instances where the writers have completely missed the mark and changed the storylines so much that it made the characters almost unrecognizable?
